» R.I.P. Martian Manhunter

I finally get around to honoring one of my all-time favorite DC heroes: J'onn J'onzz. This sizable update includes his final exploits, and details about the enigmatic Miss Martian.

In ancient Africa, the warrior Tantu made a pact with Anansi the Spider to imbue a totem with the ability to confer animal attributes upon those who would use those powers to protect the innocent. It has been suggested that Anansi was in fact a representative of a benevolent alien race. These aliens periodically visit Earth to bestow a human with animal powers, to put them in touch with nature. (Animal Man #??) Tantu used that totem to great effect and became Africa's first legendary hero. The totem was passed down from generation to generation, and became a thing of legend.

New Entries…

21ST CENTURY
At Hunter's base, Rip begins materializing along with Magog. Booster filters Magog out. Rip holds Superman-22's shirt. Booster goes to the path of the future after Magog, Rip pulls him back. He goes to find the modern-day Magog in Kahndaq, where he's aiding the army military against separatists led by Dvorcek. Booster manages to save two children whom Magog overlooked before destroying the building. Rip arrives to stop the heroes from arguing, saying Magog is destined to save many lives in the near future. Rip Hunter's Chalkboard reads: "Brainiac 5, 7 or 12? JSA-Magog = JSA, His Kingdom Still Comes! Only Ivo can save us. In Gog He'll trust. Proty1 or Proty II. Which is Guilty?" Brave & the Bold (7.09)
Blackest Night Prelude: Sodam Yat and Arisia approach Daxam to find a giant Sinestro serpent coiled around the planet. Senator Yat (wife Cara). Sodam hates the accolades he garners but appears to inspire the children. Sinestro comes to Korugar to talk with his daughter... Sonarik. Green Lantern Corps #35 (6.09)
Blackest Night Prelude: Sodam goes to take on Mongul, inspires young ones. When he attempts to access Ion power, it's denied because of Scar's activities on Oa, interfering with his ring. He must remove it to access the power, but leave himself open to lead poisoning. A power surge might interrupt the Guardian; he purposely takes an unsheilded hit from Mongul and receives Ion power. He removes his ring then heads into the sun. Green Lantern Corps #36 (7.09)
When the Shadow Thief expands his powers, it steals power from the "Shadowslide"—the teleportation system used by the Shadow Cabinet. The Thief's new access brings him into contact with Starbreaker, whom he frees from his other-dimensional prison. (JLofA v.2 #29, 33; 2009)
Part 6: The JLA tracks down Hardware in the City Of Dakota, at Gilliam Airfield; they want help tracking the Shadow Cabinet's teleportation signature. Firestorm splits so that Gehenna can teleport them to the Himalayas. When the JLA arrive, Anansi brings forth an avatar to help: Paladin. There, Dr. Light also emerges to find the Shadow Cabinet defeated by Starbreaker, Dharma near death, and Icon battling Starbreaker. JLofA v.2 #32 (6.09)
Mr. Bones warns Atom-Smasher that the D.E.O. is watching him. Stargirl recalls Al to deal with Obsidian, who has sensed a hostile presence and shut some out the JSA HQ, others in. Hourman sees a grim fate for those trapped inside. Thinking Obsidian has gone crazy, Alan takes him out, which allows the ghost of Kung to enter. Kung transports five JSAers to the moment of Hiroshima's destruction, 1945. The Spectre intervenes. JSofA v.3 #27 (7.09)
The team uses Metamorpho's body to track the meteorite. The trail leads to Opal City, where both Deathstroke and Alfred have zeroed in on the same person: "Richard Benioff" (who is actually Nigel, an old MI5 colleague of Alfred's, and who now benefits from the Insiders' longevity). Afterwards, Michael approaches Benioff and they're both killed by Deathstroke. The Outsiders arrive. OUT4 #17 (6.09)
Hakk and the others are collected by the Khund Vanamon Kreel, under the Durlan Captain, Ciji. Ciji kills Sqwaul. Dox convinces Strata and Bounder to join him. In the Dominion, the Fleet Admiral of the Xylon Expanse notifies his Emperor of a spatial intrustion from Maltus. The Omega Men send a distress signal from Maltus; they're beamed up by the Psions. Ciji commands takeover of Dox's vessel. NOTE: Bounder's home world is Cairn. REBELS v2 #4 (7.09)
Grundy attacks Molly, after the lantern, which he destroys along with the Scotts' home. GL's powers flee him as the battery bids farewell. The Phantom Stranger again urges Cyrus to find his killer. In orbit, someone monitors Slaughter Swamp (with Project Eternal Revenge) and launches Amazo 3764 to deal with Grundy. 1885: Cyrus is haunted by shadowed figures with knives. NOTE: This contradicts earlier accounts which assert Alan's power now resides within him, not the lantern. Solomon Grundy #4 (8.09)
After the Guardian rescues Mon-El from drowning, Squad K attempts to arrest Mon-El (mistaking him for Kryptonian). Dr. Light reveals that his anti-lead serum merely isolates the lead molecules. Mon-El's super-healing is fighting against the serum and eventually it will fail. It's causing his powers to cut out. Unlike Superman, Mon-El can easily cut his hair. He meets Mitch, shop owner who inspires Mon to visit France. There, he decides he wants to live at all costs. The Science Police invade a government facility and free Tellus. Drew, the Assassin watches them but is held at bay by Tellus. Drew reports to Gen. Lane, who directs him to target Guardian's daughter. Superman #688 (7.09)

» Obscure Golden Age Characters, Part 3, Detective Comics

Detective Comics (1937), was DC/National's third title (and the first to keep its original name). By 1937, a sort of "era of experimentation" had subsided. Comics publishers were learning which kinds of characters, formats and genres would be successful. Although comic books were no longer brand new, they had yet to hit the true "Golden Age" of costumed heroes. So while the character "turnover rate" was decreasing, there were still a healthy number of genres. One of the most popular was that of the detective... > READ ON

» (Not All) About Me

This is me. Something about putting myself on Twitter has spurred me post a photo of myself. Certain personal information is no mystery, as Cosmic Teams is hosted right on top of my professional portflio (that may change). I'm sure clever webophiles have discovered that.

I was cut to half time in January at my job (as an Art Director for an alt-weekly). Since then, I've treated it as a blessing. I'm really enjoying pursuing contract work, which also leaves me open to rediscover painting and explore new things like typeface design (I designed the one used in the top header).

This picture is not brand new, but is almost exactly how I'm looking today anyways :) Also non-secrets: I've lived in Minneapolis, Minn. for 20 years and have a lovely old house with my (male) partner. Probably secret: for twelve years, I've been teaching fitness classes, too. Dichotomy? I guess I am a Gemini.

And hey! It wouldn't suck if any of you could refer contract graphic design or web design work to me!

» Recently...

Even when I'm not doing larger projects, I keep small bits of information updated. Once a month, I'll post all the additions/updates I make to my chronologies, which cover the JLA, JSA, Legion and Outsiders.

New Entries…

21ST CENTURY
Prelude: Sodam refuses to help Daxam, but is convinced by Arisia and his own mother. Green Lantern Corps #34 (5.09)
The remaining five members discuss options for the League but do not appoint a leader. Dr. Light and Firestorm question Shadow Thief at Van Kull Prison near Metropolis. The villain escapes and Starbreaker comes through him to Earth. He siphons the power of Vega from Dr. Light; in the Vegan system, the sun flickers. Kimiyo follows them as they escape. JLofA v.2 #32 (6.09)
The JSA throws a suprise birthday party for Stargirl. She also learns that she must wear her braces for another year. JSofA v.3 #26 (6.09)
In Holmavik, Iceland, two Insiders named Michael and Sofia argue about their fate. The Outsiders fail to stop their "Thrasher" from sending a meteorite back to them. Metamorpho identifies it's residue and they link it to the origins of Vandal Savage. Sofia hires Deathstroke. OUT4 #17 (6.09)
The Guardian assembles a team of Science Police to help him find and free Tellus. Elsewhere, Tellus remains captive and says he's learned what he needed, and must now act. Mon-El draws the attention of the Parasite. Superman #687 (6.09)
Without her consent, Dox transforms Wildstar into a being of pure energy, and places her in a containment suit. They go to Cairn, where L.E.G.I.O.N. has driven off Garv and Garryn Bek, but Strata and Bounder still fight. (Strata mentions a baby.) The Omega Men attack Maltus. In attacking Silica, they uncover the influence of Starro. His other agent, the Queen Bee steps in. REBELS v2 #3 (6.09)
In a Metropolis cemetery, Starman exhumes the body of Superboy (Conner Kent). He then places it in a Kryptonian regeneration chrysalis, inside Superman's Fortress. There, Brainiac 5 will retrieve it in a thousand years. Legion of Three Worlds #4 (6.09)
31ST CENTURY
With the malleability of time following the first Crisis, the Time Trapper tries (but fails) to completely remove Superman from the Legion's history. A small "conspiracy" of Legionnaires allies with Rond Vidar to stop him. NOTES: In original post-Crisis continuity, Superboy/man was indeed removed from Legion lore. In current continuity, the timestream has "corrected" itself and includes him again. It is uncertain how the original events from Legion v.3 #36-50 play out in current continuity. (Legion of Three Worlds #4, 6.09)
After Superboy Prime kills Kinetix and Mordru "absorbs" her essence. Afterwards, he has a vision of the Legion's victory over the LSV. Element Lad of Earth-??? creates kryptonite that harms Superboy Prime; Prime retaliates and kills Jan. In the remains of the Fortress of Solitude, Brainiac 5 completes his plan—to restore Conner Kent (Superboy) to life. He unearths the Kryptonian regeneration chrysalis and uses Lex Luthor's DNA to complete the resurrection. The Time Trapper steals Superman and the founders away to the end of time and reveals himself—as Superboy Prime! Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds #4 (6.09)

New summaries for these JSA Elseworlds books The Liberty File and The Unholy Three. If you haven't read them, pick them up. They are gorgeously illustrated by Tony Harris and the story by Dan Jolley is a great mesh of old and new WWII storytelling. You can read both series collected in one trade paperback.

» The Liberty File: 1942: In the days of World War II, an albino psychopath, Jack the Grin (the Joker), intercepts knowledge of a Nazi secret weapon. When Jack is apprehended, he escapes, bringing the plane and its American Agents down in Egypt.

» The Unholy Three: 1948: In Berlin, a rogue KGB agent called the Parasite tortures and kills Sandy Hawkins and Johnny Thunder for information. The Martian is living on the moon helping NASA construct a base. In Gotham, the Bat pursues Harvey Dent, who has been transformed into a half monster by Arcane's magic. When Bruce returns home, he finds Gen. Maitland waiting to ask him to return to service. They have prepared Clark Kent, Super-Man, for service, too. Bruce recalls his old ally, Rick Tyler who has been working on a way to duplicate Kent's powers.

» Whoot! New Cosmic Teams! UPDATE

I've done a lot of clean up, thanks to your feedback! There is still more to do, and a couple bugs to fix.

I'v been studying more XHTML, CSS and some scripting. I'm still learning, but it made sense to me to apply this knowledge to my own site first (where it could do less harm). You'll find the same information, but hopefully a much more streamlined browsing experience. I'd like to add Google searching or something more user friendly in that area, too.

I'd Like Your Help... There's still some work to do, I'm painfully aware. This site has thousands of files and I'm doing this all manually (in Dreamweaver, that is). You can help by telling me if pages are wonky. NOTE: Outsiders and Omega Men information has not been reformatted yet.

» Legion Chronology Updates

The revelations in Legion of Three Worlds #3 prompted a whole lot of updates to the Legion Chronologies. Most of it had to do with figuring out the mechanics of the Flash family. There's a lot going on there. Did you know that Bart Allen's mother is part of the evil lineage of Professor Zoom? And further, that she is also the mother of Owen Mercer, the new Captain Boomerang? And they're all descended from Barry Allen's long lost twin brother? Yeah.

I also needed to revise a lot of terminologies used throughout them, to make it more accurate in the understanding of the current multiverse.

» Justice Society Improvements

OK this doesn't reflect well on me, but hear me out...

I was recently trolling other JSA sites and found—surprise!—they're mostly dead. One in particular had some great JSA history, which is a thing I have not done, focusing my efforts on chronologies instead. Many times I have reached out to abandoned sites and offered to merge. Alas, and as is the case this time, most times the webmaster is unreachable. To get to the point, I have reprinted a JSA history found at this site by Scott Moore. I am sort of editing it as I go, though, and adding to it. Oftentimes when I do this, the end result doesn't even bear the words or syntax of the original. If you are Scott, please contact me!

Plaigiarism is not my intent. I want to keep good work from dying, to keep it accessible. I make no money from my site, and give full credit where due. Though it may seem like I did everything you see here, that's simply not true. A fair amount is the result of many contributors.

OK so enough of that, here's what's new:

  • The JSA Chronology has been split into two versions: New Earth and Earth-2. I have gone out on a pretty big limb here and put all pre-Crisis-only info into the Earth-2 timeline. From their appearance in the recent JSA Annual, it's clear to me that essentially, on Earth-2, original JSA continuity is intact up until the Crisis on Infinite Earths. This makes for cleaner reading, I think.
  • JSA History (which I will be expanding)
  • Expanded Fanfare section which is mostly JSA in print, including details on the JLA team-ups.

I plan very soon to beef up the JSA Elseworlds and "on TV" subsections as well.

» The Metal Men

I have to recommend that you read the recent Metal Men series by Duncan Rouleau, which is currently in hardcover. The art and story are above top notch, a real breakout piece of art.

One thing to note: It's unclear after their reboot if any of their Silver/Bronze Age tales still remain in continuity—save one. In 52, Grant Morrison alluded to Will Magnus' mental instability, which happened around Metal Men v.1 #45. I'd love to flesh out the pre-Crisis history (as always with little or no help from Wikipedia; I read other profiles AFTER I write mine to sort of fact check and enhance my own work). I'm probably going to be suckered in to buy the Metal Men Showcase volumes.

I have gone through the bulk of things related to Countdown and added it to my Crisis Chronology. I won't be adding Final Crisis until that series wraps up. I find it's much easier to wait to write about something after the story is complete. There's so many questions unanswered until then. And that brings me back to the beast that was Countdown. Ugh, this series left so many unanswered questions, or I should say: it left you asking questions.

This is part three of the chronology.

» Extreme Justice

Wow, I did not expect to write an article like this one. The ball started rolling, and the more I dug into this short-lived team, the more intrigued I became. It's a title that stands in most readers' minds as a period piece—not a good one. Extreme Justice was released at a time when the industry was coming down from it's "Image high," and it preceded the hullabaloo of Grant Morrison's relaunch.

I managed to score an interview with the the series' creator, Dan Vado, who shared some great insights into working on JLA in the mid '90s.

Watch for more updates. My scanner is down so I still have some images to add. In addition, I'm getting a reference book to research JLA sales figures, so I'll be talking about that, too. This write-up led to updates in its members' profiles, most notably, Zan and Jayna. I plan to update the others' as well.

What factors motivated the creation of Extreme Justice, and its creators? Were there any redeemable qualities? > READ ON ...
