Circe
Adapted to comics by Dan Mishkin and Gene Colan
+ History
Circe is a powerful sorceress descended from the Titans of Myth. She was legendary for luring sailors and turning them into animals.
One of her most infamous treacheries was the murder of the Amazon Queen, Antiope. Circe set Antiope's lost tribe of Amazons against the original Amazons of Thymyscira, and was defeated only when the two tribes of warrior women formed an uneasy alliance.
In the modern day, Circe clashed early and frequently with the Amazon's ambassador, Diana (Wonder Woman). At one point, Circe intended to betray the princess by disguising herself as a mortal named Donna Milton. But from this, she found herself — for a time — so completed by this new life that she forgot about her plan of revenge and truly became Wonder Woman's friend.
But her true nature was roused again by the evil mastermind, Lex Luthor. She joined him against the JLA as a member of the Injustice Gang (it is possible that Luthor used the mental powers of Jemm or the Philosophers Stone to manipulate her into working with him). When the Gang met their defeat, Circe escaped. (JLA #9-15)
She clashed again with the JLA (and fellow magician Felix Faust) in an attempt to find a blood relative of Adolph Hitler to sacrifice. She was in pursuit of the great Spear of Destiny, which Hitler was the last to control; a blood sacrifice would locate the Spear. But she and her lackeys were foiled by the Justice League Elite, who prevented her from grabbing the Spear through the magical gateway she had conjured. (JLA Secret Files 2004)
Circe has borne a daughter, Lyta, from an affair with the war god, Ares. When she was captured by the Amazons and imprisoned on the new Themyscira. Lyta stayed with the Amazons, who mentored the girl in their ways. Recently, however, Ares discovered his daughter and stole her back from the Amazons. Circe too, then reignited her romance with the god. (WW #)
